Matthias Reich (born April 3, 1959 in Osterode am Harz ) is a German petroleum engineer and university professor. He is professor for deep drilling technology , special civil engineering equipment and mining machines at the Freiberg Mining Academy .

Life

In 1978, Reich graduated from high school in Osterode am Harz. After his military service as a driver he started at the Technical University of Clausthal , a process engineering -Studies, graduating in 1986 with honors. He began his professional career in 1986 at Sulzer Escher Wyss (now Voith ) as a development engineer for paper machines in Ravensburg on Lake Constance.

In 1990 he switched to the oil and gas industry, moved with his family to Celle and took up a position as a product engineer at Eastman Christensen (now Baker Hughes ), headquartered in Texas. In the following 16 years he dealt with the development, optimization and marketing of innovative drilling systems worldwide, initially as manager of the field test department, later as product line manager for automatic drilling systems. In addition to his job, he did his doctorate at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, from which he was awarded the degree of doctor for deep drilling technology in 2004. In 2006 he accepted the call from the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and has been professor for deep drilling technology, special civil engineering equipment and mining machines since then. Since 2007 he has also been director of the Institute for Drilling Technology and Fluid Mining.

In 2009 Matthias Reich's book “Auf Jagd im Untergrund” was published. It is the only German-language book that explains modern deep drilling technology in a way that is understandable for technically interested laypeople. In 2015, “Treasures from the Underground” was published, which Reich wrote together with his colleague Mohammed Amro. It explains the complex subject of oil and gas production technology in easy-to-understand language. After the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, Matthias Reich was discovered by the media as a drilling technology expert. Since then he has explained events and developments in deep drilling technology in numerous radio and television reports.

Matthias Reich lives in Freiberg , is married and has two children. In his spare time he works as a rock musician.
