Life

From 1975 Matthias Schindler served as a regular soldier in the "Feliks Dzierzynski" guard regiment , which belonged to the Ministry for State Security (MfS). After three years he was released into the reserve as a sergeant in 1978 . He then became a full-time employee and officer of the MfS, where he belonged to various main departments . He reached his highest rank when he was promoted to captain in 1988. Before the dissolution of the MfS in 1989/90, he was head of department in the Enlightenment Headquarters (HVA) with responsibility for informants in GDR embassies in Africa and Latin America. Schindler received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Economics in East Berlin.

Schindler owns 96% (as of 2014) in the holding company Communio , which is registered as a cooperative in Berlin . The communion in 2006 bought half the shares in the new Germany Druckerei und Verlag GmbH of the Left Party. The purchase price of EUR 1.6 million was to be paid in 16 installments from 2007 to 2022 including interest. The business with Schindler was the responsibility of Dietmar Bartsch as the party's federal manager. However, the Communio paid only 275,000 euros by the end of 2013, the payment arrears amounted to just under one million euros. However, the deal was not reversed.

The property at Franz-Mehring-Platz 1, on which the editors of “ Neues Deutschland ” (ND) and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation reside, is also largely part of Schindler's Communio through direct and indirect participation . Schindler and Bodo Ramelow were both managing directors of the real estate company Franz-Mehring-Platz 1 mbH. After criticizing the cooperation with a former Stasi officer Schindler, Ramelow resigned from the post in 2014 shortly before the state election in Thuringia .

At the end of 2017, editor-in-chief Tom Strohschneider left the ND amid the tense economic situation of the publisher. At the same time, managing director Olaf Koppe left ND-Verlag. Matthias Schindler, who is now both main shareholder and managing director of ND, was appointed as his successor.
