Matthias Tendler (born February 15, 1753 in Krieglach , † June 28, 1825 in Linz ) was an Austrian wood carver, mechanic, inventor and showman.

Life

Matthias Tendler worked early on in his father's carpentry workshop in Krieglach as a carpenter and figure carver and, due to his particular interest in motion sequences, developed the "Tendler machines". Among other things, he had made a highly flexible "Art Equestrian Society" out of cardboard. From 1777 he worked in Vorau and from 1789 in Eisenerz . Around 1810 he got the idea to give public displays with his dolls. During a visit by Emperor Franz II in Eisenerz, the Tendler figures caught the attention of the Emperor, who in the spring of 1811 allowed the artist to give a performance with his mechanical figures at the imperial court in Vienna, which was a complete success for him. At that time the artist "Truppe" consisted of the mentioned equestrian society and a tightrope walker and a bajazzo figure. At the end of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Tendler returned to Vienna with his machines, which he was allowed to show in front of several monarchs, including Tsar Alexander I of Russia. As a result, he made trips to Germany and Switzerland with his fictional characters, where he achieved the greatest success with the mechanical tightrope walker, who performed all possible trapeze arts on "swinging ropes, completely free". Matthias Tendler accompanied his sons Johann and Ferdinand on his travels. Matthias Tendler died in Linz on the Danube on his way home from a tour.

The Tendler family

His talent and enthusiasm for traveling theater have been passed on to his sons and grandchildren. His son Johann (1777 to 1849) and his grandchildren successfully continued the technical improvement of the automatic dolls and the travels. The painter Johann Max Tendler was a son of Johann Tendler.

A man by the name of Tendler must have come as far as northern Germany with his puppet theater, because the poet Theodor Storm used the subject and the name Tendler in his novella “ Pole Poppenspäler ”. The main character of this novella, the "Lisei", he let say words from the Bavarian-Austrian German.
