Matthias Wegner

Matthias Wegner (born September 29, 1937 in Hamburg ) is a German publicist , book author and publisher .

Life

Matthias Wegner was born in Hamburg as the son of bookbinder Annemarie and publisher Christian Wegner . He grew up in Munich and studied literature and art history in Göttingen, West Berlin, Basel and Hamburg. in 1965 he received his doctorate with a thesis on German-language exile literature . It was published as a book under the title "Exile and Literature" in 1967 (2nd edition 1968).

After a brief stint in the publishing house of his father, who died in 1965, Christian Wegner Verlag, he became managing director of Rowohlt Verlag in 1969 . From 1985 to 1990 he was program director of the German-speaking Bertelsmann book clubs in Hamburg and Gütersloh. During this time he also started journalism. Since 1990 he has worked as a freelance journalist and editor ( Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Neue Zürcher Zeitung ). He also did program work for the Hamburger Kammerspiele and the St. Pauli Theater , and has been in charge of the "Theater! Theater!" Series since 2004. in the Ernst-Deutsch-Theater in Hamburg. He is a member of the writers' association PEN Center Germany .

Matthias Wegner lives with Christiane Wegner, née Biermann-Ratjen, in Hamburg. His son is the lawyer Konstantin Wegner (Munich).
