Matthias Winiger

Matthias Winiger (born March 24, 1943 in Bern ) is a Swiss physical geographer working in Germany and former rector of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

biography

Matthias Winiger studied geography at the University of Bern and then worked as a Bern lecturer . In 1988 he was appointed full professor at the University of Bonn. Winiger's main research areas are climatology , geoecology , high mountains , remote sensing , Africa , the Karakoram Himalayas and the Alps . In January 2004 Matthias Winiger was elected Rector by the Senate of the University of Bonn . Winiger is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz.

University policy

Because of the introduction of general tuition fees in North Rhine-Westphalia , Winiger came under criticism from students. The rector was told by the students that, contrary to his assurances, he had not had an open-ended discussion. In the summer of 2006 - after the introduction of the tuition fees - Rector Winiger and the Rectorate were asked to resign by a general student assembly. Furthermore, the criticism was directed against the support fees for foreign students from countries outside the European Union amounting to 150 € per semester.
