Matthias Church (Groß-Buchholz)
The Matthias Church is a church in Groß-Buchholz in Hanover , which belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran parish there.
history
The first settlement in Groß-Buchholz took place around the Pinkenburg , a former control room of the Hanoverian Landwehr . The residents built the Antonius Chapel. The community belonged to the Jakobikirche in Kirchrode , since 1359 to St. Nicolai in Bothfeld . In 1935 there were first plans for an independent parish and church in Groß-Buchholz. In 1940 a parsonage was bought in Buchholz for the second parish of St. Nicolai with a focus on pastoral care for Buchholz and Lahe . Between 1952 and 1957, services were held in the dining room of the refugee camp on Misburger Mühlenweg (now Milanstrasse), alternating with Roman Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox services. In 1958 the now independent community was formally founded. Today's Matthias Church was consecrated on March 14, 1964. Between 1970 and 1980 the new kindergarten, a community center in the community part In den Sieben Stücken (abandoned in 2007) and a youth center followed. In 2009 the Matthias parish merged with the Messiah parish to form the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Groß-Buchholz in Hanover. In 2014 a new horseshoe-shaped parish building was built around the church to replace the old parish hall.
inner space
The altarpiece (to Revelation chapter 4) and the altar cross made of bronze, silver and amethyst are by Siegfried Zimmermann from Hanover. The windows were made by Gerhard Hausmann from Hamburg. The altar, the pulpit, the lectern and the font were made from Eifel millstone lava.
The organ building company Firma Schmidt & Thiemann from Hanover built the organ in 1966. It has 28 registers and around 2000 pipes.
Bell tower and bells
There are a total of 9 bells in the tower of the church; In the roof of the parish hall there is a bell over 100 years old that comes from the old Antonius chapel in Kapellenbrink. The bells in the tower are rung by the sexton at the service of a button. The bells also ring automatically every day by means of a timer, namely at the following times: Monday to Friday at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The small bells in the tower come from the former Messiaskirche on Lenbachplatz. The bell in the parish hall is always rung when the " Our Father " is being prayed in the service . When the nave was not yet built, the services took place in the parish hall of the parish hall, but the bell tower was already in place at that time and so the bells could be rung from the parish hall.
Trivia
Klaus Meine , the front man of the Scorpions , had his first appearance in the youth room of the parish in 1966 with his band Mushroom .
