Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. (born July 26, 1965 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch filmmaker.

life and career

Van Heijningen is the son of a Dutch film and television producer of the same name. After finishing school and studying, van Heijningen began a successful career as a commercial filmmaker, including for internationally known brands such as Toyota , Peugeot , Renault , Pepsi and Budweiser . In the 1990s, van Heijningen gained a few experiences in the film industry by working as a production and assistant director in cinema and TV productions. In 1996 he wrote and produced the short film Red Rain , which he also directed. In 2009 it became known that Zack Snyder , who also came from the advertising film industry, had become aware of van Heijningen's work and was planning to hire him as a director for a prequel of his hit horror film Dawn of the Dead . Since the project was initially delayed, van Heijningen successfully sought the vacant director's chair for The Thing , a prequel to John Carpenter 's horror film of the same name , and made his cinema debut as a director. The Dawn of the Dead prequel Army of the Dead , which van Heijningen's second directorial work is to be in Hollywood, was announced for 2013, but has not yet been realized (as of August 2017). No other directorial work has been done so far. According to the Internet Movie Database , he made commercials again in 2017.
