Matuschek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matuschek (German the Matuscheks (plural); Polish Matuszek (singular) or Matuszki (plural); Czech Matušek , also Matuškové ) is a Czech-Silesian family name .

Origin of name and meaning

The family name is derived from the pet form of the first name Mateusz (Polish), Matthäus (German) or Matúš (Czech), which is Mateuszek in Polish and Matúšek in Czech . Due to the different regional varieties of Silesian , the name in the variant Matussek or also in Polish Matuszak , Matuschak , Matuszyk , Matusik or Matuszczak is found very often , especially in the region around Opole .

Due to the inflection of names in Slavic languages, the female form Matuschka or Matuska is also used . Due to migration movements in Germanic language areas without inflection of names, it can happen that inflected forms (instead of the basic word) solidify into the family name . For example, an unmarried female bearer of the name (e.g. Anna Matuschka) can pass on the female name form to illegitimate male descendants (e.g. Anton Matuschka) because the civil registry regulations in German-speaking countries do not allow a return to the male base / stem form of the name do not allow appropriate flexion. In Slavic language areas, the respective name is inflected according to the child's gender (e.g. Anton Matuschek).

Spread of the name

The original largest distribution area was in Silesia and the Czech Republic, largely congruent with the territory of the Matuschka (noble family) . Among the name-bearers there are therefore also some distantly relatives or family members of the aristocratic family who are not considered in the line of succession (as first-born).

The name spread through migratory movements throughout Europe, especially in the regions of the Ruhr area during the period of industrialization . Most of the namesake can still be found in the north of the Czech Republic and in Upper Silesia around Opole and Neustadt in Upper Silesia .
