Matwei ( Russian Матвей ) is a Russian male given name, Russian form of the ancient Greek name Matthaios ( Greek Ματθαῖος ).

Matwei is the Russian spelling of the Latin Matthaeus , this from the Greek Matthaios ( Ματθαῖος ), this from the Hebrew Mattatjahu (מתתיהו), short form Mattatja . Mattatjahu means "given by YHWH (God)", which in modern times is often modified into "gift of God".
