Matwei Prokopyevich Burlakov
Matwei Prokopjewitsch Burlakow ( Russian Матвей Прокопьевич Бурлаков ; born August 19, 1935 in Ulan-Ude ; † February 8, 2011 in Moscow ) was a Russian colonel general . From 1990 to 1994 he was the last commander in chief of the Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) and directed the withdrawal of troops from Germany.
Life
Burlakow comes from a working class family. In 1957 he graduated from the Omsk Military School MW Frunze, 1968 the Frunze Military Academy and 1977 the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Soviet Armed Forces . During his 42-year career, he served in various military positions as the commander of a rifle platoon, battalion , regiment and division . From 1983 to 1988 he was the first deputy commander of the Transbaikalia military district and thus also responsible for the 39th Army stationed in Mongolia , from 1988 to 1990 commander of the Southern Group of the Armed Forces (Hungary), which returned home under his leadership December 1990 to August 31, 1994 Supreme Commander of the GSSD. From 1992 until the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Germany, he received the additional status of authorized representative of the Russian government for the western group of troops. From August 1994 he was Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation , but was released from his duties by President Yeltsin in November 1994 and dismissed in February 1995. The reasons given for the impeachment were allegations of corruption and involvement in connection with a journalist murder. However, the allegations could never be proven. After his release, he was President of the Veterans Union of the GSSD , a traditional association of withdrawn armed forces.
Burlakov was married and had two children. He was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery.
