Maui Ocean Academy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maui Ocean Academy ( MOA for short ) was a windsurfing boarding school in Haiku , Maui, Hawaii , which was opened to provide young people with a career as professional windsurfer with the ideal background for athletic training and good school education. The school opened in 1998 and closed in early 2005 . In addition to the classic subjects up to the high school diploma, the school also offered subjects such as Hawaiian Studies and Community Work . The school was mostly completed online through the Christa Mc Auliffe Academy program . In the afternoon the school program consisted of windsurfing , surfing and community works .

School founder

The couple Ferida and Tim Siver founded the school to give their two sons Luke and Levi Siver the opportunity to become professional windsurfers. The Canadian children's author and teacher Judi Riley contributed significantly to the success of the school, as did Aunty Pua, famous in Hawaii .

costs

The monthly cost per student was approximately $ 1,600 a month. You were fully catered for, got sails from the sponsor of the school and a windsurfing board , which you were not allowed to loop (loop = somersault when windsurfing) because the material suffered too much.

Training areas

The school's training areas were all of the windsurfing beaches on the island of Maui, specifically Ho'okipa Beach , Sprecklesville, and Kanaha .
