The Maumeen Pass (also Maumean , Irish Mám Éan - German "Watch the birds" ) is a 432 m high mountain pass in Ireland's County Galway . It is located near Recess ( Irish Sraith Salach ) in Connemara near the Knocknahillion ( Irish Cnoc na hUilleann ) in the Maumturk Mountains ( Irish Sléibhte Mhám Toirc ) and is the second highest pass in Ireland after the 456 m high Connor Pass .
The pass was formerly a mountain sanctuary of the old Irish god Lugh . Above the pass there is a small niche in the rock called "Leaba Phádraig" (St. Patrick's bed) and an inconspicuous church, as well as two holy springs . On the last Sunday in July ( Lughnasa ) there is a pilgrimage to the pass. The mass is sung in Irish.
Nearby are the Burnt Mounds of Poundcartron .
Legend
Legend has it that St. Patrick sank a ram in a small mountain lake here. In Gallo-Roman times, the ram was an attribute of the continental god Mercury / Lugh.
