Maurice Block , German Moritz Block (born February 18, 1816 in Berlin , † January 9, 1901 in Paris ) was a French statistician and economist of German origin.

Life

Maurice Block comes from a Jewish family and spent many years of his childhood and youth in Paris. He studied philosophy and political science in Paris and at the universities of Bonn and Gießen , as well as history and geography, and completed his studies with a doctorate at the University of Tübingen .

Block then went back to France and worked there as a teacher for some time. In March 1844 he joined the Ministry of Agriculture as a civil servant and in 1852 became the second chief of the Statistical Bureau . Ten years later, Block resigned from this office and from that time on devoted himself only to his own scientific and literary work.

In April 1880, Block was elected a member of the Institut de France to succeed Leoncé Guilhaud de Lavergne . Five years earlier, the institute had already awarded its Statistique de la France . He contributed significantly to the assertion of German science among the Romance peoples.
