Maurice Alfred Joseph Décamps (born October 2, 1892 in Paris ; died October 8, 1953 in Ermont ) was a French painter . He mainly painted floral still lifes , but was also a landscape painter .

biography

Maurice Décamps was the son of Alfred Emile Décamps, a commercial clerk, and his wife Gabrielle Dupetit. He studied at the École Régionale des Beaux Arts in Amiens in the Somme department . One of his teachers was Pierre Eugène Montézin. His completion of the master class focused on the art of flower display ( l'Art de la fleur ). He belonged to the school of still life painters along with Achille Cesbron, Henri Fantin-Latour and Georges Jeannin. His means of expression were the harmony and power of floral motifs and less their grace, delicacy and lightness. His still lifes were inspired by pointillism and the luminosity of the paintings by Alfred Sisley , Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet .

His first exhibitions were in 1913 in the Salon des Artistes Français of which he was a member. He received many awards, including the Prix ​​de la Savoie in 1926 , the Prix ​​de la Société des Paysagistes in 1927 , the Prix ​​de Raigecourt-Goyon in 1929 and the Prix ​​Justin Claverie in 1938 .
