Maurice Houtart

Maurice Jules Marie Emmanuel Houtart (born July 5, 1866 in Tournai , Hainaut , Belgium , † February 1, 1939 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician of the Catholic Party and banker .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and worked as a banker after gaining a doctorate in law .

He began his political career in 1895 when he was elected a member of the Tournai Town Council , of which he was a member until 1916. At the same time he was from 1908 to 1916 aldermen (alderman) of Tournai. After the end of the First World War he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1918. After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he was a member of the Senate from 1925 to 1936 , where he represented the interests of the Arrondissements of Tournai and Ath .

On May 20, 1926, Houtart was appointed finance minister by Prime Minister Henri Jaspar in his government and held this office for almost six years under his successor Jules Renkin until February 27, 1932. At the same time, he was also colonial minister between 1926 and 1927 . For his services he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on February 22, 1932 .

After leaving the government, he was President of the Bank of Brussels from 1932 until his death in 1939.
