Maurice Vast
Maurice Vast (born July 25, 1898 in Flixecourt , † November 13, 1979 in Amiens ) was a French industrialist, resistance fighter against National Socialism and politician.
Life
Maurice Vast was the son of a tailor. At the age of 18 he was drafted to fight in the First World War. He was wounded in the war and was awarded the Médaille interalliée and the Croix de guerre .
After the war he first worked as an accountant in Flixecourt, later he opened a company ( Igol ) for the processing of oils, fats and fuels in Amiens. With the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted again and fought against the German campaign in the west . He was taken prisoner by Germany and was held in the Châteaubriant internment camp for two months before he was released.
In 1942 he joined the Resistance and was an important head of Liberation Nord under the pseudonym Pierre Crocquet . After the liberation of France , he became a member of the socialist party Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière (SFIO). On September 24, 1944, he became mayor of Amiens and in this office he designed the reconstruction of the city after the war. In 1953 he resigned the post to his deputy Camille Goret , but was again mayor in 1959.
In 1965 he broke with the SFIO and from then on ruled with the support of a centrist and a right-wing party. In the 1971 election he was defeated by a united left list led by René Lamps ( Parti communiste français ). Against this he also lost in his constituency in the parliamentary elections in 1962 , parliamentary elections in 1968 and parliamentary elections 1973 .
From 1945 to 1967 he was also representative of the canton of Amiens-7 (Sud-Ouest) in the department council of the Somme department .
Honors
Vast is buried in the Saint-Acheul cemetery in Amiens. A square near the Amiens Belfry now bears his name.
In Dortmund there is a Maurice-Vast-Straße which connects the Westfalenhallen with the Westfalenpark . As mayor, Vast had campaigned for the twin city partnership between Dortmund and Amiens, which was founded in 1960 as one of the early Franco-German city partnerships .
