The Mauritius night heron ( Nycticorax mauritianus ) is an extinct endemic night heron of Mauritius . He is known only from seven fragments that were found in Mare aux Songes . These fragments consisted of the skull , the pelvis , the ulna , the raven bone , the tarsometatarsus and the spoke . Today only the raven bone and the tarsometatarsus remain. This species was first described in 1893 by Alfred Newton and Hans Gadow of the University of Cambridge , who indicated the tarsometatarsus with a length of 81 to 87 millimeters. It was probably first mentioned in a travelogue by François Leguat from 1693, and its extinction is believed to be in the late 17th century.
