François Leguat

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

François Leguat (* 1637 in la Bresse , † September 1735 in London ) was a French explorer.

Live and act

Leguat was a Huguenot who fled to Holland in 1689 after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 . In 1690, according to Henri Duquesne's plan , he set out on a ship called l'Hirondelle , together with a group of other Huguenots, and sailed towards the Indian Ocean . They planned to start a new life on the island of Reunion , which they believed had been abandoned by the French. Since Réunion was still inhabited by the French, they ended up on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues instead .

Two years later they built a ship and sailed to Mauritius . Leguat later returned to Europe. In London in 1708 he published a description of his adventures including his natural history observations under the title Voyages et aventures de François Leguat et de ses compagnons en deux isles désertes des Indes orientales . It also describes species such as the Rodrigues solitaire , the Rodrigues parakeet and lizards of the genus Phelsuma , probably the Rodrigues giant gecko ( Phelsuma gigas ) and the Rodrigues day gecko ( Phelsuma edwardnewtoni ).

A reserve on Rodrigues is named after him, the François Leguat Reserve.
