Mauritius Elbel (born March 12, 1730 in Böhmisch-Leipa , † July 26, 1798 in Osek ) was abbot of the Osek monastery.

Life

Elbel entered the Osek Monastery in 1746 , took religious vows in 1747, studied theology in Prague and became a priest in 1754. He then studied canon law in Prague for another three years. In 1761 he took over the chair for philosophy in the Archbishopric College of St. Adalbert ibid. In 1763 he became abbot secretary and professor of Bible studies in the monastery, in 1765 he received the title of doctor of theology and was appointed apostolic notary. In 1772 he came to Altbrünn ( Mariasaal ) as provost . On May 9th, 1776 he was elected abbot, and in 1785 he was also the visitor and vicar general of the Bohemian order province.

It is thanks to him that Emperor Josef II averted the planned abolition of the monastery and instead even received confirmation of all earlier privileges from the Emperor in an extensive document dated November 20, 1786. In 1786 he founded a locality in the monastery grave, had the natural history cabinet and picture gallery built, as well as producing the paintings in the large abbey hall and laying out the abbey garden in its current size.
