Maurizio Garzoni

Maurizio Garzoni (around 1730 - 1790 ) was an Italian Dominican and missionary in Kurdistan who, thanks to his edition of the first Kurdish grammar, Grammatica e Vocabolario della Lingua Curda, is considered the "father of Kurdology ".

biography

Maurizio Garzoni, a Dominican missionary, came to Mosul in 1762 and moved on to Amediye . He noted that Kurdish was the language of the regional communications that would be understood by Muslims and Christians, while Nestorian Assyrian Neo-Aramaic , Jacobites a Syrian dialect and Armenians , Armenian languages.

Based on the Kurmanji dialect spoken in Amediye , he published the first Kurdish grammar in 1787. At the end of his grammar is an Italian-Kurdish dictionary with around 4600 words. He also wrote a note about the Yazidis . Among other things, the work contains Christian prayers such as the Lord's Prayer in Kurdish.
