Maury Klein

Maury Klein (born March 14, 1939 in Memphis (Tennessee) ), actually Maurice Nickell Klein, is an American historian and author of books on American history in the 19th century and American railroad history.

Life

Maury Klein was the son of a Jew who immigrated from Poland and the daughter of a doctor from Louisville, Kentucky . The family moved several times during his childhood. He finally graduated from East Denver High School in 1956. He completed his studies at Knox College in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts . He then studied history at Emory University in Atlanta . He wrote his dissertation on Edward Porter Alexander . From 1964 he was active as a lecturer in history at the University of Rhode Island . In 1973 he was appointed professor. In 2008 he retired.

Klein began writing at the age of 18. However, since he could not imagine a life as a freelance writer, he embarked on an academic career. He hoped to be able to finance his writing career. His first book on the railroad was based on his Newcomen Fellowship at Harvard Business School in 1967. He was named for the Pulitzer for his books on railroad magnates Jay Gould and EH Harriman, and the industrial revolution in America in the 19th century Prize nominated. He was also the first author to receive two Outstanding Book Awards from the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society .

Klein, who lives in Narragansett, also worked as an actor with the University of Rhode Island theater company and supported the operation of the Trinity Repertory Company . He also held management positions at the university for several years.
