The Callendar House mausoleum is a mausoleum near the Scottish city of Falkirk in the council area of the same name . In 1972 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The structure was built in 1816 at the behest of William Forbes of Callendar on the grounds of Callendar House , probably as the resting place of his suddenly deceased first wife. Archibald Elliot is responsible for the design as the architect . The pre-estimated construction cost was £ 2,370. In 1963 the entire property was sold to the local government of Falkirk, which later restored the manor house, but not the mausoleum. Due to the continuing deterioration, including as a result of vandalism, the building was entered in the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland in 2008. It has now been closed so that the vandalism is limited to graffiti on the outer walls. His condition was last classified as poor in 2011, but with low risk.
