In September 1889, the Altena entrepreneur and secret councilor Gustav Selve launched a competition among the members of the Berlin Architects' Association to design an inheritance burial for the Selve family. Gustav Selve's father Hermann Dietrich Selve (1813–1881) founded the metal rolling mill Basse & Selve in the Versetal near Bärenstein in 1861 , which Gustav Selve expanded into a major company.

The claim stipulated that the mausoleum should be built in the form of a hall, contain six brick tombs and be surrounded by ornaments. The construction costs were not allowed to exceed 15,000 marks . Prize money of 350 marks and 150 marks was offered for the winners of the competition.

The architects Emil Hoffmann (1845–1901), Otto Schmalz (1861–1906), Rudolf Speer (1849–1893) and the architectural office of Gustav Erdmann and Ernst Spindler submitted designs to the competition. The design submitted by Eduard Endell (1852–1911) was finally carried out in 1893.

The building in the neo-baroque style , closed on three sides, stands on a square floor plan. It was made of red sandstone and crowned with a copper dome. The two side walls are pierced by arched, artistically designed stained glass windows, in the back wall is a smaller round window. There is a mosaic floor in the interior. Here are the marble busts of the male family members, including Gustav Selve's father Hermann Dietrich Selve. It was created by Luigi Calderini, an Italian painter and sculptor.

In July 1987 the building was badly damaged by vandalism . Columns were overturned and marble busts were broken. The building was then extensively renovated and restored. In addition to stone carvings, the stained glass windows were restored and provided with protective glazing. Hermann Dietrich Selves' destroyed marble bust was also restored. The access to the tomb was secured by iron bars so that no unauthorized persons can enter.

In April 1988, the community of heirs applied for the mausoleum to be listed as a historical monument . On July 6, 1988, the building was added to the list of monuments of the city of Lüdenscheid under the serial number 79 .
