Ernst Spindler studied architecture at the Technical University of Charlottenburg and at the Technical University of Stuttgart . He later worked in Berlin, for two years he was head of the "Association of Berlin Architects" and co-editor of the magazine " Berliner Architekturwelt ". With his brother-in-law Gustav Erdmann , he ran the successful Erdmann und Spindler architecture firm in Berlin from 1884 . The two architects realized country houses, industrial and commercial buildings and also tombs. They left behind many remarkable buildings in Berlin and the surrounding area.

One consequence of the business expansion was a stricter division of labor, so that Erdmann preferred to take over the business and practical side of the company, whereas the management of the atelier fell to more and more Spindlers. The successes were also based on the fact that they were not limited to the creation of the floor plan and the external architecture, but also took the artistic training of the interior into their own hands and basically did without the so-called architect-decorators. While motifs from older architecture appeared in free use in the earlier buildings, the more recent works showed a completely independent modern design. Accordingly, the interiors also have a completely new character. They had made use of the new achievements in the field of interior art in terms of interior design, harmony of lines and colors. Achieving the homely, comfortable and functional always remained the top priority.

Ernst Spindler died on December 7, 1916 in Berlin. He was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin , in the grave of the Gustav Erdmann family - without naming his name. He is mentioned with the date of his burial in the cemetery register of the dead (information from the Twelve Apostles churchyard administration responsible here).
