The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) is a non-university research institution sponsored by the Max Planck Society (MPG) and is based in the Hamburg district of Bahrenfeld on the campus of the German electron synchrotron DESY. The institute primarily conducts basic research in the field of natural sciences in the field of experimental and theoretical physics and chemistry , in particular in the area of very fast physical processes and chemical reactions, which are carried out with ultra-short time spectroscopy using pulsed radiation sources such as the free electrons located near the institute -Lasers FLASH and European XFEL can be examined.

The institute emerged from a previously existing research group of the Max Planck Society for Structural Dynamics at the University of Hamburg . The decision to found an independent institute with five research departments was announced in 2012. The institute was officially established on January 1, 2014 and at the time of its inception consisted of two departments, Condensed Matter Dynamics , led by the institute's founding director Andrea Cavalleri , and Atomic Resolution Dynamics, led by RJ Dwayne Miller . On November 1, 2014, the theory department under Ángel Rubio was added.
