Andrea Cavalleri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrea Cavalleri (* 1969 in Pavia near Milan ) is an Italian physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter . He pioneered the field of ultra-short time spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation on materials with strongly correlated electrons.

Life

Andrea Cavalleri studied electrical engineering and laser physics at the University of Pavia and the University of Essen . In Pavia he obtained a Laureate degree in 1994 and received his doctorate in 1998.

From 1998 to 2001 he was a postdoctoral fellow with Kent R. Wilson at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), then from 2001 to 2005 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). In 2004 he moved to the University of Oxford , where he became a professor in 2006.

In 2008 the Max Planck Society appointed him the first director of the Max Planck Research Group for Structural Dynamics at the University of Hamburg, which in 2013 became the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter with Cavalleri as Managing Director.

Cavalleri is a professor at the Universities of Oxford and Hamburg .

Act

During their time in Wilson's group in San Diego, Cavalleri and his colleagues carried out measurements of the dynamics of atomic structures in solids with X-ray pulses in the femtosecond range . The ultra-short X-ray pulses were generated by laser-produced plasmas.

At the LBNL, he began to combine spectroscopy with ultrashort X-ray pulses with terahertz radiation to excite, in particular, strongly correlated electron systems. He was significantly involved in the development of the first scientific applications of the "slicing" technique, with the help of which ultra-short, very intense X-ray pulses are obtained from synchrotron radiation .

His work at Oxford dealt with light-induced processes in quantum materials . Among other things, Cavalleri's group succeeded in demonstrating light-induced superconductivity in cuprates .

At the Max Planck Institute, the research activities of the group led by Cavalleri focus on the physics of strongly correlated systems and their control by strong electromagnetic transients in the terahertz frequency range. Topics covered include light-induced superconductivity , the regulation of magnetism through non-linear phononics, and the coherent control of Mott insulators and charge density waves .

honors and awards

The German Physical Society and the British Institute of Physics awarded Cavalleri the Max Born Prize in 2015 "for his time-resolved measurements of photo-induced phase transitions in electronically correlated materials". Also in 2015 he received the Dannie Heineman Prize from the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 2016 he was made a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 2017 he was accepted into the Academia Europaea . For 2018 he was awarded the Frank Isakson Prize for optical effects in solids by the American Physical Society .
