Life

Center of life in youth: The Eifertei in Tübingen

Born as the son of a printer, teacher and innkeeper at the Eifertei tavern , where the old Tübingen fraternity was based, Eifert studied Protestant theology in Tübingen after attending the Lyceum in Tübingen and the grammar school in Stuttgart . During his studies in 1826 he became a member of the old Tübingen fraternity / fire rider .

Max Eifert was pastor in Calmbach from 1840 to 1849 and in Eningen unter Achalm from 1849 to 1881 . When he retired, he asked for a piece of land which in the 19th century was still far outside the town. The community of Eningen unter Achalm left this land along the current Lortzingstrasse to him for life.

Helene Lange , one of the most important representatives of the early German women's movement, spent her “retirement year” in 1864 at the age of 16 for older daughters in the Eifert household in Eningen. The self-evident exclusion of women from any intellectual conversation shocked her and probably reinforced the feeling that she was campaigning for the right to study for women. At the same time she was deeply fascinated by the couple, their wisdom and their openness. In her memoirs she sets a remarkable memorial to the rectory and Max Eifert.

In 1871 Max Eifert received the Queen Olga Order and in 1874 the Knight's Cross of the Friedrich Order, 1st class. A street in Calmbach reminds of him, in Eningen there is a sign on the "Eiferthöhe" named after him.
