Max Gluckman
Max Gluckman (born January 26, 1911 in Johannesburg , South Africa ; † 1975 ), from Russian-Jewish parents, was a South African ethnosociologist who founded the Manchester School .
Life
Educated in Apartheid South Africa , which made social science research increasingly difficult, he initially carried out field studies (especially right-wing ethnology ) in Barotseland ( Northern Rhodesia , now Zambia ). His approaches strongly influenced the research at the then highly respected Rhodes Livingstone Institute in Lusaka , from where he was appointed professor at the University of Manchester . Since 1968 he was a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy . In 1970 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
The Gluckman monograph Custom and Conflict in Africa is an important English contribution to the sociology of conflict and the ethnosociology of rituals .
Gluckman's numerous students include AL Epstein , Bruce Kapferer , J. Clyde Mitchell, and Victor Turner .
