Max Herberhold (born August 2, 1936 in Münster ) is a German chemist .

Life

Herberhold grew up in Sigmaringen and studied chemistry at the TH Stuttgart and at the University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1963 under Ernst Otto Fischer . His dissertation was on photochemical CO substituents of metal carbonyl compounds. As a post-doctoral student , he was with George S. Hammond at Caltech in 1965/66 . In 1970 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich under Fischer with a habilitation thesis on ligand-ligand interactions in complexes of activated olefins . In 1972 he became scientific advisor and in 1977 scientific advisor and professor at the Technical University of Munich. In 1978 he became a professor for inorganic chemistry in Bayreuth. In 2002 he retired.

He dealt with the photochemistry of organometallic compounds, the chemistry of functionalized ferrocenes , ferrocenophanes , half-sandwich complexes of vanadium and titanium and the synthesis and ligand properties of sulfur-nitrogen compounds. While still at the Technical University of Munich, he isolated chromium tetranitrosyl.

From 1986 to 1991 he was chairman of the chemistry class of the Society of German Chemists as successor to Herbert Roesky .

His PhD students include Helmut Guido Alt (* 1944, Professor in Bayreuth), Georg Süss-Fink (Professor in Neuchatel) and Anthony F. Hill (Professor at the Australian National University ).

Since 1955 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Trifels Munich in the CV.
