The character of the detective Paul Vanel runs through all of his crime novels. Vanel was a Swiss master detective with an eventful past who bore the autobiographical traits of the author. The cases took place not only in Switzerland, but all over the world - even in remote parts like Mauritius . In the later books, Vanel evolved and ultimately headed an international investigation agency in Hong Kong . With his last book Finale in Bangkok , the author also ends the story of his detective.

Max Morell wrote a total of 21 books and 15 notebooks . The magazine novel series Chez Morell was also about his detective. In the series, however, some of the science fiction booklets appeared - a genre that is completely absent from his books.
