Max Rumpf (sociologist)
Max Rumpf (born November 13, 1878 in Berne , † October 19, 1953 in Haar near Munich ) was a German sociologist. He formulated a sociology in which the focus was not on society but on nationality .
Life
After graduating from the old grammar school in Oldenburg and studying law, which he completed with a doctorate , Rumpf became a private lecturer at the University of Göttingen in 1908 , then in 1911 a professor at the then commercial college in Mannheim and finally in 1927 professor of sociology, folk research and civil law the later Hindenburg University in Nuremberg , where he retired in 1943 . After 1945 he continued his research until his death.
In his main works, Rumpf names two basic strata of the people: the natural-cultural peasantry and the civilizing way of life of the urban working class . According to Carsten Klingemann , Rumpf represented a “conservative peasant sociology” with which he was unsuccessful in the Third Reich. The journal Volksspiegel, which he had a major influence on as publisher . The magazine for German sociology and folk science ceased publication in 1938.
