Maximilian von Kempis

Maximilian Josef von Kempis (born June 20, 1757 in Bonn , † November 5, 1823 in Cologne ) was a politician from the Electorate of Cologne and mayor of the city of Cologne.

Maximilian von Kempis studied law in Bonn in 1774 and was court counselor and customs administrator in Bonn from 1777 to 1778. He then served as secret secretary to Archbishop Max Franz and was also the mayor of Bonn. From 1789 to 1793 von Kempis was the district director's envoy for Münster in Aachen and moved to Cologne at the end of 1793. There he became mayor of the imperial city of Cologne in 1797. Shortly before, the imperial city senate had been abolished and Kempis elected president of the new magistrate . During the French occupation he opposed the Cisrhenan movement . After leaving the office of mayor, von Kempis continued to serve as a city councilor in Cologne.

In 1783 Maximilian von Kempis joined the Order of Illuminati . Here he was a member of the lodge "To the Newly Crowned Hope" in Vienna.

His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. C, between HWG and lit.H). His son-in-law Everhard von Groote is also buried here.
