Maximilien Marie
Charles François Maximilien Marie (born January 1, 1819 in Paris ; † May 8, 1891 ibid) was a French mathematician and mathematician.
He was the son of the infantry captain of the Napoleonic Army Simon Marie (1775-1855) and Henriette Josephine de Ficquelmont (1780-1843), who came from the lower Lorraine nobility.
Marie studied from 1838 at the École Polytechnique and then at the artillery school in Metz. He taught mathematics at Auteuil and in 1862 was a tutor at the École Polytechnique, from 1879 examiner for the entrance exams.
He published a lot, not only on mathematics and the history of mathematics, but also on education and social issues. His mathematics history in 12 volumes is biographically oriented and goes as far as Niels Henrik Abel and François Arago . He was an officer in the Legion of Honor.
His sister was Clotilde de Vaux (1815-1846), who was in correspondence with Auguste Comte . She had been abandoned by her husband and met Comte through her brother, since he was a professor at the École Polytechnique. Comte fell in love with her, but as a devout Catholic she did not enter into a relationship.
