Maya Gabeira (born April 10, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian professional surfer . She is one of the best big wave surfers in the world.

biography

In 2009, Gabeira, who only started surfing at the age of 14, won the ESPY Award in the “Best Female Action Sports Athlete” category. Maya Gabeira also won the Billabong XXL Award in the "Girls Best Overall Performance" category five times in a row. That same year, in Dungeons, South Africa, she hit a 46-foot (14-meter) high wave, the highest wave ever surfed by a woman. Maya Gabeira's father is Fernando Gabeira, a founding member of the Brazilian Green Party Partido Verde and a former member of a guerrilla group. From 2010 to 2013, the Brazilian was in a relationship with the Australian actor Jesse Spencer . In October 2013, Gabeira floated lifeless on the water after falling in a giant wave near Nazaré off the Portuguese coast and was successfully resuscitated. On January 13, 2018, Gabeira conquered a 68-foot (20.72-meter) wave at the same location, again setting a record for the highest wave ever surfed by a woman and earning an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .
