Maya Kuliyeva

Maya Kuliyeva , Turkmen Maýa Kulyýewa , Russian Мая Кулиева , German also Maya Kuliewa and Maria Kuliewa (born May 1, 1920 in a mountain village near Bezmein , Turkestan ASSR , Soviet Union ; † April 27, 2018 ) was a Soviet-Turkmen opera singer (soprano) and actress.

Life

From 1938 to 1941 Kuliyeva received her vocal training in the Turkmen Department of the Moscow Conservatory . In 1941 she went to the newly opened Makthtumkuly Theater, the opera house in the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat . She was successful here in the performance of Turkmen and other Central Asian operas. She performed the following operas, among others: Shasenem and Garib , The Rose and the Nightingale and Zokhre and Takir by Andryan Shaposhnikow and Abadan by Yuliy Meitus and T. Kuliew. Maya Kuliyeva was the first Turkmen singer to perform classical opera repertoire in her homeland. She celebrated great success with it. She sang Marfa in Rimsky-Korsakov's Die Zarenbraut , Tatjana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin , Marguerite in Gounod's Faust and the title character in Madama Butterfly . In the concert hall, Kuliyeva celebrated similar successes as on the stage. She made numerous recordings on the state-owned Soviet Russian label "Melodiya". Kuliyeva also worked as an actress.

In 1955 Maya Kuliyeva was awarded the title "People's Artist of the USSR".
