Maybach MD 871

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Maybach MD 871/872 engine is a high-speed, high-performance diesel engine from Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH for installation in fast marine boats, patrol vehicles and yachts.

design type

The MD 871/872 is a four-stroke diesel engine with 16 cylinders in a 60 degree V arrangement. The motor housing consists of welded cast steel parts in tunnel construction. The crankshaft is very torsionally by their plate construction, each disc running in large roller bearings and axially by a groove bearing fixed. The fork connecting rods and the secondary connecting rods run in plain bearings . The pressurized oil-cooled pistons consist of two parts. The aluminum piston skirt has two oil control rings, the screwed-on steel piston head has three compression rings.

The wet cylinder liners are replaceable. The cylinder heads can be individually removed and have six valves arranged around the central combustion chamber as well as an injection device in which the injection pump and nozzle form one component. A continuous upper part of the cylinder head is attached above the cylinder heads, each with two camshafts, rocker arms with hydraulic valve clearance compensation and the operating elements for the injection devices, which are controlled by the intake camshaft. The lower end of the engine is the welded oil pan from sheet steel. The motor cannot be reversed and rotates to the left. The two exhaust gas turbochargers are located in the V of the cylinder and have charge air coolers.

Disc crankshaft

The crankshaft has nine bearings and all bearing points are inductively hardened . The disc-shaped crank webs are also the inner raceway of the main bearings, the outer races are pressed into the engine housing. A viscous vibration damper is mounted opposite the power-emitting side . The engine is started with compressed air .
