Maylandia hajomaylandi ( Syn . Metriaclima hajomaylandi ) is a cichlid which is endemic in the small island Chizumulu found that about 30 km off the Mozambican coast of the East African Lake Malawi lies. Like the generic name Maylandia , the species epithet hajomaylandi is a dedication name in honor of Hans J. Mayland, an author of aquarium non-fiction books.

features

Maylandia hajomaylandi has a typical Mbuna shape, a small head and a short snout. Sexually mature males are gray-blue with seven to nine yellow-brown transverse bands on the sides. There are three blue stripes on the top of the head. The rest of the head, throat and chest are orange-yellow, the cheeks opal green. The unpaired fins are blue and yellow, the dorsal and caudal fins have blue and yellow fin rays. The anal fin shows two to seven yellow-orange, dark-edged egg spots. The pelvic fins are yellow and blue, the first two fin rays are whitish-blue, the second sometimes dark. Females are gray-brown or gray-blue and show dark transverse bands that are narrower and less noticeable than those of the males. The breast is silver gray, all fins are gray blue.

The jaws are covered with three to five rows of teeth. The front teeth of the outermost row of teeth are two-pointed, the lateral ones are single-pointed. The teeth of the inner rows of teeth are three-pointed in the females, in the males enlarged single-pointed teeth sit between the three-pointed ones. On the first gill arch there are 13 to 15 gill rakes .

The unusually high number of dorsal fin hard rays, which distinguishes Maylandia hajomaylandi from all other Maylandia species, is striking .

Maylandia hajomaylandi feeds on phytoplankton and growth. Like almost all Malawi cichlids and all mbuna, Maylandia hajomaylandi is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood.
