Maylandia pyrsonotos ( Syn .: Metriaclima pyrsonotos ) is a species of cichlid that occurs endemically in the rocky littoral of the islands of Maleri and Nakanthenga in the Malawian section of the East African Lake Malawi . Before it was described , the species was known to aquarists as Pseudotropheus zebra "red dorsal".

features

Maylandia pyrsonotos becomes 13 cm long and has a typical Mbuna shape. Sexually mature males are light blue with five to eight black transverse bands. The head is black with two light bands between the eyes. The dorsal fin is reddish to orange ( pyrsonotos = Gr . For red back), the first fin ray and the tips of the fin membranes are white. The transverse ligament of the sides sometimes extends into the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is lined with blue and orange. The front edge of the pelvic fins is whitish, the rest black. The anal fin is blue with one to five egg spots. Females are usually blue-gray with weak transverse ligaments. The head is black with gray bands between the eyes. Anal and pelvic fins are black, the dorsal fin are patterned black and brown. Some females are also completely black. There are slightly orange piebald morphs in both sexes.

The jaws have two to three rows of teeth. The teeth of the outermost row of teeth are usually two-pointed, some at the back are single-pointed. The teeth of the inner rows of teeth are three-pointed. On the first gill arch there are 10 to 14 gill rakes on the ceratobranchial, 2 to 3 on the epibranchial and one between these gill arch elements.

Like almost all Malawi cichlids and all mbuna, Maylandia pyrsonotos is a mouthbrooder .
