The Mayottedrongo ( Dicrurus waldenii ) is a species of bird from the family of Drongos .

It is endemic to Mayotte on the main island of Grande Terre.

The distribution area includes mountains with extensive moist tropical or subtropical forests and mangrove forests , bush areas and plantations above 200 m altitude.

description

The Mayottedrongo is 34 to 38 cm tall. He is the only drongo, and a large black songbird, on the island. It is deep black throughout with a green-bluish sheen. Only the iris is brick red. The very long tail measures 175 to 206 mm and is forked 58 to 90 mm deep. The female is a little smaller, otherwise the sexes do not differ. Young birds are dull black-brown, the underside paler and the tail shorter and less forked.

The male has a wide repertoire of rough, scratchy calls, including a loud, repeatedly repeated “tyok” or “squaa-aa-luchuk” as well as soft “quit” calls on the hunt.

The species is monotypical .

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects, especially cicadas and other equilateral birds , butterflies , moths and caterpillars .

The breeding season is between September and February.

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered to be endangered ( vulnerable ) due to habitat loss .
