The Mbeere District was a district in the province of Eastern in Kenya . The capital was Siakago . In 1999, 170,953 people lived in the district on 2,093 km². The district was divided into the four divisions Gachoka, Mwea, Evuvori and Siakago. In 1997, 56% of the population in the Mbeere District lived below the poverty line.
As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Embu County .
economy
The people in the district lived mainly from agriculture and livestock. Tobacco and cotton were grown , among other things . The Tana River flowed through the district and was dammed by several dams. Various hydropower plants produced electricity there.
Healthcare
In 2005, the Mbeere District had a total of 32 health care facilities, including two hospitals. The most common illnesses in the district were malaria , respiratory infections and worm infections . The HIV - prevalence in 2005 was 12.5%. Infant mortality was 7.1%, while 11.9% of children died before their 5th birthday.
