Mbhazima Shilowa

Mbhazima Samuel (Sam) Shilowa (born April 30, 1958 in Olifantshoek ) is a South African politician. He is vice-chairman of the Congress of the People (COPE) party and a member of the South African parliament. Until October 2008 he was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and from 1999 to 2008 he was Prime Minister of Gauteng Province .

Role in the trade union movement

Shilova joined the trade union movement in 1981, and subsequently stood up as a union representative in the company for better working conditions and for the rights of his colleagues. Shilowa made a career in the trade union movement and was elected vice chairman and later chairman of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union .

Shilowa played an important role in the founding process of the South African trade union umbrella organization Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in 1985 and he was elected vice chairman of the association in Gauteng. His further rise led him to the position of Deputy Secretary General in 1991 and Secretary General in 1993. He had to give up this post in 1999 when he was elected Prime Minister.

Political career

Shilowa was elected to the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party in 1991 . In 1997 he became a member of the ANC and in the same year a member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of this party. On June 15, 1999, he was elected Prime Minister of Gauteng Province. Shortly after the resignation of President Thabo Mbeki , Shilova also submitted his resignation as prime minister. Paul Mashatile succeeded him in the office of Prime Minister. Shilowa later also returned his party membership card and announced his support for Mosiuoa Lekota's efforts to found a new party.

At the founding meeting of the Congress of the People (COPE) party in Bloemfontein on December 16, 2008, about 4,000 delegates elected Mbhazima Shilowa as deputy party chairman. Official registration as a party and recognition as such by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) took place on December 19, 2008.
