Aerial photographs of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (FIDASE, 1956–1957) were used to map them. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after the American engineer John G. McCall (1923-1954) from the University of Alaska , who between 1951 and 1952 succeeded in measuring the flow movement of a karst glacier for the first time in Norway .
