McCheyne Memorial Church

The McCheyne Memorial Church is a secular church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1989 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2002.

history

McCheyne Memorial Church was built between 1869 and 1870. The Scottish architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington was responsible for the design . Around 1899 the building was extended in the same style. The church commemorates the died young priest Robert Murray M'Cheyne that filled the pastor of the nearby St. Peter's Church, and a driving force of the Scottish schism of 1843, the so-called "disruption" was. Later the congregation was united with that of St. Peter's Church.

In 1999 the church became obsolete . In 2004 the building was sold to a private investor from London . He intends to divide the church building into holiday apartments. In 2001 the unused building was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. In 2016, his condition was classified as relatively good with moderate risk.

The church building stands at the junction of Shepherd's Loan on Perth Road west of the city center. The bell tower rises to the left of the north-facing main facade of the neo-Gothic building . The square tower tapers to an octagonal floor plan with a polygonal pointed helmet and a final wrought-iron cross. At its base is a granite shrine embedded with a commemorative plate to M'Cheyne. The two gables to the right of the tower have a wide tracery and two rose windows . At the foot is the pointed arch portal with its ornamented spandrels . There are three gables on the eastern flank .
