The McDonald Ice Rumples ( English ) are an area of 24 km² (6 km long, 4 km wide) of ice humps on the surface of the Brunt Ice Shelf off the Caird coast of the East Antarctic Coatsland . In 1957, measurements showed a maximum height of 18 m above the level of the ice shelf a few hundred meters from its front.
They were known to scientists from the British Royal Society Expedition (1955-1959) because their base camp was in the immediate vicinity. The British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton named this area as the Allan McDonald Glacier in January 1915 . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee adapted this designation to the actual nature of the object in 1960. It is named after Allan McDonald of the British Association of Magallanes in Punta Arenas , Chile , who in July 1916 provided money to equip the ship Emma for the unsuccessful rescue of Shackleton's endurance expedition (1914-1917) who were stranded on Elephant Island .
