Coordinates: 20 ° 39 ′ S , 141 ° 44 ′ E The Shire of McKinlay is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 40,737 km² and has about 800 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the northwest of the state about 1,370 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .
The largest town and administrative seat of the LGA is Julia Creek with about 370 inhabitants. Other localities are Kynuna , Malpas Trenton, McKinlay, Nelia and Taldora.
history
The researcher John McKinlay named the river with his own name, which gave the Shire its name. His explorations also led to the settlement of the area from 1867. In 1888, the locality McKinlay was founded and four years later an administrative area named Mackinlay was established. After Julia Creek gained in importance, the administrative headquarters were moved there in 1932.
administration
The McKinlay Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
