Julia Creek is a small town in the center of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located at the junction of the Flinders Highway (A6) with the Wills Developmental Road (S83), 664 km west of Townsville and 137 km east of Cloncurry at 123 m. The 2016 census found a population of 414.

history

The town was named after the niece of Donald McIntyre , the first white settler in the area. McIntyre moved into a property called Dalgonally in 1864 , about 70 km north of today's small town. This was only a few years after the unfortunate Burke and Wills expedition passed through the area. The settlement was founded in 1907 at its present location as the terminus of the Richmond extended railway line to service the copper mines at Cloncurry .

A village school was founded in 1911 with nine students and expanded in 1932 and 1934. In 1963 they built their own high school. In 1972 a hospital with 16 beds was built. It was not until 1952 that the city was connected to the general electricity supply.

On December 27, 2015, a train with 26 tank cars derailed near the city. The tank wagons contained, among other things, 200,000 liters of sulfuric acid , a small part of which escaped.

economy

The main industries in Julia Creek are agriculture (especially cattle and sheep raising) and mining , which is mostly practiced around the Billiton Mine in Cannington . The city is a major cattle trading center with a large cattle yard and facilities. Before the railroad was extended to the much larger cities of Cloncurry and Mount Isa , Julia Creek was also an important transshipment station for freight and passenger transport.

Public facilities

Julia Creek owns a library, swimming pool, museum, tourist office, and art academy.
