The McMurdo Ice Shelf is an ice shelf off the Scott coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is the part of the Ross Ice Shelf bounded by McMurdo Sound and Ross Island in the north and Minna Bluff in the south. Studies show that the ice shelf table differs relatively clearly from the Ross Ice Shelf and deserves an individual name.

New Zealander AJ Heine of the DSIR Geophysics Division , who carried out extensive studies of the ice shelf from 1962 to 1963, suggested the name for the table between Ross Island, Brown Peninsula , Black Island and White Island . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names subsequently expanded the scope of the name to the south.
