The Meakan-dake , ( Japanese. 雌 阿寒岳 , literally: "female Akan summit") is a 1499  m high active volcano on Hokkaidō in Japan . It is located in the district of Akan-chō in the north of the city of Kushiro in the prefecture of Hokkaidō .

The stratovolcano originated in the southwest of the 13 by 24 kilometer Akan caldera . Also within the Caldera the are 1476  m high Akan Fuji ( 阿寒富士 ) directly south of the Meakan and 1371  m high Oakan-dake ( 雄阿寒岳 , "male Akan-peak") in the Northeast. Akan Lake is located between Meakan and Oakan .

In historical times, of the volcanoes within the caldera, only the Meakan was active with weak eruptions . The last eruption in November 2008 resulted in smaller phreatic eruptions .

The Meakan-dake is one of the 100 famous mountains of Japan and is located together with Lake Akan in the Akan National Park . The remote, extensive and inaccessible area is developed especially around Lake Akan as a recreation area for onsen guests, hikers and campers.
