Doron Almog ( Hebrew דורון אלמוג; *  1951 in Israel ) is an Israeli major general of the reserve and former commander of the southern command .

background

Almog is committed to the Aleh charity , which cares for people with disabilities, including his son Eran. His autistic son Eran died in 2007 at the age of 23. Almog is the founder of a southern Israeli relief service, called Aleh Negev, which provides support for the disabled through housing and medical and social services in a kind of village housing complex. After Eran's death, the service was renamed Nachalat Eran, which also campaigns for the integration of disabled people into society.

Five members of the Almog family from Haifa died on October 4, 2003 by a suicide bomb bomber in Maxim's restaurant in Haifa: Ze'ev Almog, 71, his wife Ruth, 70, their son Moshe, 43, and grandson Tomer Almog, 9, and Assaf Staier, 11. Doron's second brother Eran, a tank commander, bled to death in the Yom Kippur War in the Golan Heights.

Operation Entebbe

Almog was involved in Operation Entebbe's hostage rescue in 1976. He was the first pilot to mark the runway for the following flying machines and then led the conquest of the flight control tower. He was the last to leave Ugandan soil after the 30-minute rescue operation was successful and flew back to Israel with the 105 hostages (3 dead, 10 wounded).

Operation Moses

In 1984/1985 Almog was involved in the airlift for the resettlement of 8,000 threatened Ethiopian Jews (Falascha or Beta Israel), in the so-called Operation Moses (more than 4,000 Falasha probably died earlier on the refugee route).

Southern Command

In the years 2000-2003 he was head of the Southern Command of the Israeli military and thus responsible for securing the Gaza Strip . At this southern station, Doron also fought for the rights of the Bedouins in the Negev desert. He started a special training initiative that enabled many Bedouins without a school leaving certificate to acquire a university degree. (Bedouins make up up to 25% of the population in the Negev Desert region.)

War crimes allegations

As head of Southern Command , Almog is said to have ordered the demolition of 59 houses near Rafah in 2002 . Two reasons are given for this operation: first, as a measure to prevent the infiltration of Israeli territory by militant Palestinian groups (a military attack contrary to the Geneva Conventions ), and second, to allegedly retaliate for the killing of Israeli soldiers, an act which would also run counter to the Geneva Conventions. The Israeli government replied that the demolition of the houses was a legitimate act of self-defense and border security, as the houses were used by Arab terrorists to prepare for attacks. On September 11, 2005, Almog escaped arrest at London Heathrow Airport . The day before, an arrest warrant had been issued against him on suspicion of violating the Geneva Conventions in connection with the house demolitions. After a tip from the Israeli ambassador Tzvi Hefetz, Almog stayed on the plane to avoid a possible arrest. The petition to issue the warrant was brought by Palestinian Center for Human Rights attorneys Daniel Machover and Kate Maynard. The arrest warrant was issued by Chief London Magistrate Timothy Workman of Bow Street Magistrates' Court and overturned after Almog had escaped because he had left British territory and was no longer under the jurisdiction of the court.

Prawer plan

Since 2011, Almog has been the chairman of the committee for the implementation of the controversial Prawer Plan , which includes the legalization of Bedouin villages in the Negev that were not recognized by the government until then, as well as the resettlement of 30,000 to 40,000 Bedouins from 35 unrecognized settlements in the region provided for new buildings made available by the state. Due to the lack of majority ability and resistance of those affected, as well as the right and left political spectrum, the vote in the Knesset on the implementation of the plan was suspended in December 2013 until further notice.
