The Trento-class was a heavy cruiser class of the Italian Navy . The class consisted of the three ships built in Livorno , Trieste and Genoa in the late 1920s :

The three cruisers were built according to the limits of the Washington Naval Agreement . In order to be able to meet the restriction of 10,000 tons, sufficient armor was dispensed with in favor of the higher speed. This shortcoming was eliminated in the cruisers of the Zara class that were built a few years later .

Trento

From June to October 1929 the Trento crossed the South Atlantic, in 1932 off China , where it secured the Italian base in Tianjin together with marines from the San Marco battalion during the second Sino-Japanese war . Starting in 1934, the three Trento-class ships formed the 3rd cruiser division that operated in the western Mediterranean during the Spanish Civil War . During World War II , the Trento took part in almost all operations, including the sea battle at Punta Stilo , the sea battle at Cape Teulada and the battle at Cape Matapan .

In June 1942, she tried along with other units, the British Malta - Convoy "Vigorous" intercept. After an air raid in the morning of June 14 Ionian Sea had become unmanageable, it was on June 14 at 09:10 in position 36 ° 10 '0 "  N , 18 ° 40' 0"  O from the U- Sunk boat HMS Umbra .

Trieste

The cruiser Trieste was the flagship of the 3rd cruiser division. In 1940 the ship took part in the sea battle at Cape Teulada . In November 1941 she was badly damaged by the British submarine HMS Utmost . In 1943 she sank in the La Maddalena naval base after an American air raid . After the uplift, the cruiser was sold to Spain and scrapped there a short time later.

Bolzano

This slightly modified cruiser essentially shared the fate of the other two ships of the 3rd Cruiser Division. The Bolzano was badly damaged by a torpedo hit in mid-1943 and then brought to La Spezia , where it was supposed to be repaired. On June 22, 1944, British and Allied Italian combat swimmers sank the ship in the port of La Spezia, which was occupied by German troops. In 1947 the wreck was lifted and scrapped.
